For Spring 2016 we started in the Hamptons and ended in Oahu for our Late Summer mailer. Photography by Dewey Nicks, styling by Deborah Watson and art direction by Suzi Jones. An all-star crew if there ever was one!
In late Spring of 2016 our department was tasked with creating a campaign that represents the breadth and diversity of the Tommy Bahama lifestyle including furniture, which has never been featured so prominently, along with 3 of our Restaurants, Bars and Stores. This 132 page mailer is a keystone result of that effort as we take our guest across the globe to different locations that are a testament to the fact that no matter where you travel you can relax in comfort
and style.
Matilda Jane Clothing was a Fort Wayne company specializing in vintage-inspired, high end apparel and accessories for primarily girls from infant to early teen, as well as a smaller collection for women with occasionally offerings for dad and brother. This gallery a collection of images from various seasonal photoshoots with Zoe Berkovic and Melanie Acevedo for which I was responsible from creative direction to final production.
More often than naught my task on our location lifestyle shoots was to capture product stills, environment and/or behind-the-scenes imagery as part of the seasonal story in print and online. The days were long and often hot, but the experience and results were worth every minute. All photography
here is mine, with styling and assistance
from Greq Quist.
Flavors of the Southern Coast is the second in a series of cookbooks that Tommy Bahama partnered with Chronicle Books and the expertise of Pamela Geismar and her team to produce. Many of the recipes are from our own restaurant menus adapted by Rick Rodgers for the average kitchen, along with many that he's added to give the book that extra southern kick. Photography by the talented duo of Peden + Munk, food styling by Alison Attenborough with prop styling by Amy Wilson.
For Holiday 2011 we traveled to the island of Ibiza, Spain. While known for it's dance clubs and world-renowned DJs, we spent the week on the the more relaxed side of the island.
Photography is mine with Greq Quist styling.
Through the years the Tommy Bahama brand had developed a bit of a narrow, unintended perception that it was an old-man's brand, which isn't true. This was a brand concept piece I created that was about the essence
of the brand geared towards a younger audience. While it was never produced
(all photography is copyrighted scrap only),
it proved to be an important guideline
for me personally about what I love
about the brand, and how I think of
making life one long weekend.
Every once in a while you get a chance to work with some incredibly talented, fun people. For me, that's happened on numerous occasions, one of which was 2 weeks of shooting with Andrea Gentle and Marty Hyers of Gentle & Hayers, Amy Wilson and several others at Jack Studios in NYC at the end of 2016.
Tommy Bahama started as primarily a men's brand but it has since blossomed into so much more. For this piece it was all about women, and the design team hit it out of the park! The location was the Hamptons, with photography by the impeccable Dewey Nicks, styling by seriously stylish Deborah Watson, art direction by the talented and delightful Suzi Jones.
OK, so most of these are from Tommy Bahama whose budget and marketing strategy for advertising waxed and wained thru the years, but the do represent the effort with something of a mixed bag.
As a destination brand, sometimes a trip to the desert is the best way to extend the adventurous spirit of an island-inspired mind set. In Spring of 2010 we went to Palm Springs where the colors of the season and a relaxed spirit of adventure fit right in. Photography by Anne Menke, design direction and layout by me.
In 2011 I was hired to take some photographs for the Belle Epicurean Bakery as part of their brand refresh. If you're ever in the Madison Park or Downtown Seattle I highly recommend stopping by! Food styling by Greg Quist and Teri Lynn Sloan.
For Spring 2011 we ventured to the South
of France to illustrate the fact that you can take the island spirit anywhere. Lifestyle photography by Dewey Nicks, styling by David Burnett, producer Susan Piper,
with layout, design direction, product
and environment photography by me
with Greq Quist styling.
Spring 2016 was a transition period for Tommy Bahama from the previous brand expression and creative direction. This is the first of several mailers to reflect that change, including a more product-centric photography direction, a cleaner design direction and recasting of models, one of which resulted in Lil' Kev, the mascot for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the NBA Finals. Design and typography by me with photography by Dewey Nicks, art direction Suzi Jones and styling by Deborah Watson.
Our beginnings may have been inspired by the Bahamas, but Hawaii seems to have a hold on our hearts as we continue to go back to the Islands for inspiration and location photography. Holiday 2009 was a bit nostalgic as we began to evolve the brand in new directions. This was one of my favorite pieces from that time from the overall photo and design direction, layout and production by me (printed on Mohawk Superfine Eggshell using UV inks by ColorGraphics), with photography by Anne Menke.
It's hard to recall the exact number of times we went to Yellowstone National Park when I was growing up but why it took so long to get back after I flew from the nest is a mystery. Yellowstone is truly one of our nation's great national treasures! Add a couple of more hours to your drive and you can hit the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole. God's country if there ever was. All photos are mine.
When we opened our Flagship restaurant, bar and store in NYC we had the opportunity to make a tropical splash on 5th Ave and give those passing by something to dream about. At over 24' high I'd say we did alright.
Location is everything, especially when it has an interesting story to tell and the light never lets you down. All photography here is mine,
with Greg Quist styling.
For Summer 2012 we traveled to Placencia, Belize via puddle jumpers where we were greeted by biting sand flies and constant rain. Tropical locations don't get that way without the help of Mother Nature, we just happened to visit when she was taking a break from sunny skies. Still, it was a beautiful place to spend a week and a great gig if you
can get it. All photography here is mine.
Harbor Island in the Bahama's is about as close as you can get to the genesis of the Tommy Bahama brand. From the soft, pink sand to the vibrant colors of the water, it just doesn't get any prettier than this. This place is hands down one of my favorite tropical locations, and for that reason one of my all-time favorite people is India Hicks, who has figured out how to have your cake and eat it to with an island elegance that's hard to beat. Lifestyle photography by our long-time partner in crime and incredibly talented Dewey Nicks, who has taught me more about how to be a better photographer than anyone else. One of the perks of the job is rubbing elbows with amazing people, and Dewey is at the top of the list! Layout, design, production along with product and environment photography by me.
Sometimes a story is better told in B&W. This happens to be one of them. For Spring 2011 we traveled to the South of France where on this day we lived the life of luxury while shooting at an amazing coastal villa in Eze. Ooh la la. All photography here is mine.
Spring is a time of renewal and Spring 2012 was no different as we updated the direction of our mailers, reflecting some adjustments to the brand guidelines, and a stylistic approach to the photography and story-telling with Ferdinand van Alphen on board as the new VP of Creative. Photography by Dewey Nicks, styling by David Barnett with layout, design and location/product photography by me.
Tommy Bahama opened its first retail space in 1995 and included a restaurant and bar as part of the experience. Since then, they've opened 17 more Restaurant, Bar & Store locations including 1 in Tokyo, Japan (one has since closed), and while they share several menu items, with an emphasis on locale ingredients and flavors no two are exactly alike. What better way to experience the brand across all the senses?! Photography by Peden + Munk, prop styling by Amy Wilson, food styling by Alison Attenborough, with design direction by me and design by myself and Nina Davenport.
Little Palm Island is a 6 acre island off Big Pine Key 28.5 miles north on US 1 from Key West in the Florida Keys, one of 13 unique properties of the Noble House Hotels & Resorts Collection at the time. These are some of the images I art directed with Kevin Syms, photographer, as we refreshed the property collateral and photo library circa 2000.
Packaging photography and business card concepts for Sur La Table. Photography by Iridio Studio, Seattle, art direction by me, design by myself and Brian Walcott.
While working at PPCH (Penna, Powers, Cutting & Haynes) in Salt Lake City, UT one
of my client was Easton Archery. Following the success of the Olympic Archery team,
who used Easton products, we put together
an extensive product catalog capitalizing
on the momentum of the
Atlanta 1996 Olympic games.
For Summer 2011, for budget reasons we went to Santa Barbara to shoot the companion piece to the previous Fall and Holiday shoots in Spain in order to capture a similar look and feel. Photography by Dewey Nicks, producer Susan Piper, product photography by me with Greq Quist.
For Sping of 2012 we didn't venture too far
by way of Miami, Florida. The appeal of Miami personally started with me in the 80s when Miami Vice was a hit, and it's never gotten
old or any less seductive over the years.
Must be the heat. Photography here is mine.
Seattle's only waterfront hotel, The Edgewater boasts a rich history and epic location with unimpeded views of the passing boats and Olympic Peninsula all year long. Part of the Noble House Hotels & Resorts Collection and a favorite of owner Pat Colee. Photography by Kevin Syms, art direction
by me.
The second mailer of a new direction that was one of my favorites at Tommy Bahama. Between the stories, cast, location and the creative/design direction, we hit our stride with communicating the essence of the brand in a fresh way. Location photography by Dewey Nicks, product studio photography by David Meredith and design by me.
Sun Valley, Idaho is as classic of an American resort as you can get. Founded by the Chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad
W. Averell Harriman in 1936, it quickly became the place to be seen for Hollywood celebrities such as Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe and Earnest Hemingway, who eventually made the area his home. Today the tradition continues with the likes of Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mark Zuckerberg, Demi Moore and others. Once you've been there you understand why, the spirit of
which we tried to capture in their Winter
and Summer brochures.
I spent most of my college years at the University of Utah working in the design studio for the Division of Continuing Education. What does that have to do with this campaign? Education is in my blood, and I was proud of what we accomplished early on with this campaign for adult higher education organization while at PPCH
in Salt Lake City.
Some of the various identities and support materials created over the years, noting that those for 67 and LaPlaya were done with Bruce Hale.
It isn't just a metaphor. To say that Sara and I love to travel is an understatement, and the more who can join us the merrier. What started out as a trip for 2 quickly became more interesting when 4 of our good friends decided to join us. After 3 days of exploring ancient Athens we hopped a plane to the island of Paros where for 3 more days we laid by the sea before getting on a sailboat for a week long sail around 8 of the Cyclades Islands, finishing it off with a few extra days sitting atop the Caldera in Santorini where the only thing better than the view was knowing that we'd be going through London on the way home to see some old friends including Sargent, Van Gogh and Churchill. Photos are a combination of Canon 5D and iPhone.
